“Spring cleaning isn’t just about your home; it’s about your soul"

(Emily Richards).

Do you enjoy 'spring cleaning’ or is it a necessary, joyless set of tasks?  Spring cleaning your entire life involves decluttering and refreshing various aspects of your existence. The principle of addition through subtraction comes into play:  when we subtract things, negative/worry thoughts, acquaintances who drain us on any level, responsibilities that aren’t ours to manage, the stressors, the over-scheduled calendar, too much stuff, and too many social obligations from our lives, we add what’s important to us.

This process can be broken down into several key areas:

  • Home Organization and Minimizing

Start by decluttering our living spaces. Focus on one room at a time, sorting items into keep, donate, and discard categories. This not only creates a more pleasant environment but also reduces stress.  While some readers enjoy having lots of stuff around their home, minimizing the stuff leaves more room for the few selected items we truly delight in or benefit from.

  • Mental Clarity

Take time to reflect on our mental well-being. Consider journaling or meditating to clear our minds. This can help identify areas of our lives that need attention, change, or subtraction.

  • Financial Health

Review our finances by organizing bills, budgeting, and setting financial goals. This can lead to a more secure and stress-free financial situation.

  • Personal Growth

Focus on our physical and emotional health. Establish new routines that promote wellness, such as exercise, healthy eating, and self-care practices. This holistic approach can lead to a more fulfilling life by subtracting what we don’t want to continue and adding what we want to continue or start.  If your New Year’s resolutions fell apart after a few weeks, perhaps focusing on short-term experiments may be the way to go.  I do this every year, rather than planning resolutions.  If you want to know more about this  technique, open the link to read my blog post on how this method works: https://www.reimaginelifecoach.com/post/experiments-not-resolutions-2

  • Spiritual Devotion

You may be thinking of deconstructing your high-control traditional religion to free yourself to explore, through intentional questioning of your core beliefs to see what resonates as truth to you.  This is a great time to do that.  If you are solid in your spirituality, perhaps this is a great time to learn a variety of Metaphysical practices to enhance your spiritual devotion.  Here are a few posts on this topic: https://www.reimaginelifecoach.com/post/metaphysical-moment-part-i , https://www.reimaginelifecoach.com/post/metaphysical-moments-part-ii , https://www.reimaginelifecoach.com/post/metaphysical-moments-part-iii , https://www.reimaginelifecoach.com/post/experiments-not-resolutions-2  , https://www.reimaginelifecoach.com/post/metaphysical-moments-part-iv .

Here’s what I’m doing for spring cleaning:

  • minimizing my books - If I’ve read a book and don’t want to refer to it again, I donate it

  • minimizing my clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry - I’ll never be a size 0 again, so clothing that doesn’t fit, isn’t my style anymore, are uncomfortable, or have duplicates of are being donated.  If the shoes I have aren’t comfortable, they are outta here! Forget wearing high heels! I no longer match bags to outfits, so I only keep the bags that are practical. I sorted through my jewelry and minimized my collection.

  • minimizing my cooking - I don’t enjoy cooking like I used to, so I minimized meal prep by ordering from a local place that serves vegan, vegetarian, organic, super healthy meals.  Their meal prep is easy to order and pick up.  And, I save money because if I bought all of the ingredients needed for the recipe, it would cost way more than paying for the meal prep meals. I got rid of specialty baking pans and cooking utensils.  I’m not going to use 4 pie plates, so off they went.

  • minimizing social activities - I revised my calendar to have fewer social events going on so I can enjoy my peaceful home.

  • minimizing photos / snapshots - I’m not overly sentimental, so, it’s easy for me to either throw out old photos, send photos to others who will enjoy them, or scan them to digital media for the few I want to keep.

  • minimizing my workouts - I only do workouts that I enjoy.  I shun the philosophy of “no pain / no gain.”

  • minimizing saying ‘yes’ - I no longer say ‘yes’ to an opportunity when I want to say ‘no.’

  • minimizing subscriptions - I deleted / canceled several subscriptions and streaming services.
