The COVID-19 pandemic has had some unusual outcomes. Daily, I hear stories of people who quit their jobs and are now serving in more satisfying enterprises; their courage to leave jobs they loathed and find work that fits with their philosophy of life came out of the pandemic. When does one know if a job is too good to leave or too bad to stay?
In a quick search, I found https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/signs-it%27s-time-to-quit-your-job that gives 15 signs it’s time to leave your job. And, here is a peer-reviewed journal article that discusses “The Great Resignation” that is an off-shoot of the COVID pandemic: https://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/document.php?id=cqresrre2022020400.
Recently, I worked with a client who put in her resignation, and will leave her current job in a couple of months; she wants to cultivate other interests. Over coffee, she told me she has not had a single moment of doubt that this was the right decision for her; she has an app on her phone that is counting down the days until that job is part of her past. Here is how she explained it: "It was a good job until it wasn’t, and I am stepping out to curate a life I want, not just accept the one I'm currently in." When my client read the indeed.com article referenced above, she told me she realized 14 of the 15 statements were true in her soon-to-be past work. Here is another statement that, for me, is a deal-breaker on staying in a job: If trust is not part of the organizational culture and it is not easy to see who one can trust, it's time to leave.
Is your current job too good to leave or too bad to stay? I can work with you to find that answer and to plan a new path if you discover it’s time to shift your focus. Life is too short to stay in a toxic environment where you are not respected, not trusted, not appreciated, not encouraged, not paid enough, and not offered promotions to meaningful work.
