We know from science that,“…energy comprises all things and that energy systems are conscious. Earth spins within an infinite electromagnetic field. Everything participates in this swirling, oscillating, vibrating energy… So, when we are dealing with the subject of energetic frequencies, it is not a mysterious ‘something’ vibrating in the stratosphere [of outer space], but directly within our individual inner space” (qtd. in Peirce, Frequency, the Power of Personal Vibration, xi-xii). What are frequencies, energies, vibrations and why do I care about them?
What is ‘frequency’? According to quantum thinkers at Northwestern University in Illinois, “Frequency describes the number of waves that pass a fixed place in a given amount of time. So if the time it takes for a wave to pass is 1/2 second, the frequency is 2 per second. If it takes 1/100 of an hour, the frequency is 100 per hour. Usually frequency is measured in the hertz unit, named in honor of the 19th-century German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz. The hertz measurement, abbreviated Hz, is the number of waves that pass by per second. For example, an ‘A’ note on a violin string vibrates at about 440 Hz (440 vibrations per second)” (https://www.qrg.northwestern.edu/projects/vss/docs/communications/1-what-is-frequency.html) More about Hz later.
What’s a simple definition of ‘energy’? “Energy is the life force that flows through all things…Frequency is the rate at which energy vibrates. This can be measured in hertz (Hz). Vibration is the amplitude, or intensity, of energy” (https://www.bshko.com/post/live-in-flow-nikola-tesla-energy-frequency-vibration). [This is a great article for a basic understanding of energies, frequencies, and vibrations.]
Then, what is ‘vibration’? “Vibration is the rapid back-and-forth movement of physical particles, as a reaction to different forces. Vibration involves the disruption of something from its equilibrium point. This is a balanced state between opposing forces. Vibration is usually discussed in relation to the creation of sound” (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/vibration).
William James, philosopher and psychologist, reminds us, “We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface, but connected in the deep” (qtd. in Peirce, Frequency, the Power of Personal Vibration, xxvi). There are clear relationships between frequency, vibration, and energy. Often, though erroneously, these terms are used interchangeably. Scientists have tested the frequencies naturally emitted by elements such as flowers, trees, animals, humans, and even in inorganic matter. ‘Solfeggio,' “…frequencies have a repeating pattern of six codes, according to sound therapists. On the basis of these six codes the frequencies can be reduced to the cross sums 3, 6 and 9” (https://meinlsonicenergy.com/en/topics/Solfeggio-Frequencies). Nikola Tessla, Professor Willi Apel, and Dr. Joseph Puleo considered these number patterns resonate with music and mathematical significance (https://meinlsonicenergy.com).
“‘Plants probably don’t hear like we do,’ says Dr Dominique Hes, biophilia expert and lead researcher at Horticulture Innovation Australia’s Plant Life Balance. ‘But some research shows that speaking nicely to plants will support their growth, whereas yelling at them won’t. Rather than the meaning of words, however, this may have more to do with vibrations and volume. Plants react favourably to low levels of vibrations, around 115-250hz being ideal’” (qtd. in https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/jan/11/they-respond-to-vibrations-does-talking-to-plants-actually-help-them-grow).
Do frequencies affect humans too? Yes! “Sound frequency, or pitch, is a fundamental aspect of sound that can have a significant impact on the human psyche. It is the measure of how fast or slow the vibrations of a sound wave are, and it determines the perceived highness or lowness of a sound. In this article, we will explore the various ways in which sound frequency can affect human psychology, and how it can be used as a tool to influence emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being. One of the most well-known effects of sound frequency on human psychology is its ability to influence emotions. Different frequencies can evoke different emotions in listeners, and this is often used in music and sound design to create a desired mood or atmosphere. For example, lower frequencies are often associated with feelings of sadness, melancholy, or calmness, while higher frequencies tend to be associated with happiness, excitement, or tension. This is why you might hear a lot of low, mellow music during a relaxing spa treatment, while upbeat, high-pitched music might be used to get people pumped up at a sporting event. Sound frequency can also have an impact on behavior and cognition. Research has shown that certain frequencies can improve attention, memory, and learning, while others can cause distractions and impair performance. For example, studies have found that listening to music with a moderate tempo and pitch can help students perform better on tests, while music with a fast tempo or high pitch can be distracting and hinder performance. Similarly, the use of binaural beats, which are specific frequencies played through headphones that can alter brain waves, has been found to enhance relaxation and improve focus and concentration.
Another way in which sound frequency can affect human psychology is through its impact on the physical body. Sound waves can cause vibrations in the body, and these vibrations can produce various physiological effects. For example, low-frequency sound waves can cause the body to relax and release tension, while higher frequencies can stimulate and energize the body. This is why music and sound therapy are often used as complementary treatments for a variety of physical and mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain” (https://medium.com/@zerocool.faam/the-effects-of-sound-frequency-on-human-psychology).
What HZ frequencies are beneficial to humans? “Specific frequencies are linked to specific patterns in numerology and geometry, and are said to have specific effects on the body and mind, such as:
174 Hz relieves pain and stress
285 Hz heals tissues and organs
396 Hz liberates the listener from fear and guilt
417 Hz facilitates change
528 Hz for transformation and DNA repair (known as the ‘miracle frequency’)
639 Hz reconnects relationships
741 Hz helps provide solutions and self-expression
852 Hz brings the listener back to a ‘spiritual order’
963 HZ encourages a sense of oneness and unity
To experience the benefits of different frequencies, you can search for Binaural Beats online, which includes frequencies to elicit brainwaves like Delta for sleeping, Theta meditation, Alpha for reduced anxiety and more positivity, Beta for increased focus and problem solving, and frequencies to help improve motivation and learning too” (https://www.ekhartyoga.com/articles/wellbeing/a-guide-to-sound-healing).
Apps such as Insight Timer and Amazon Music available a variety of Hz music to check out. I listen to 11 minutes of 963 Hz music before I go to sleep each night; I sleep deeply and peacefully. When I leave the house, I ask Alexa to play 174 Hz for my anxious dachshund and he settles down right away.
Many people enjoy ‘sound baths.’ If you haven’t heard this term yet, here is one explanation: “A Sound Bath is a deeply-immersive, full-body listening experience that intentionally uses sound to invite gentle yet powerful therapeutic and restorative processes to NURTURE YOUR MIND AND BODY” (https://saraauster.com/what-is-a-sound-bath). If you are interested in learning more or experiencing a ‘sound bath,' check at your local metaphysical shop. You may hear friends speak of ‘raising their energies, frequencies, vibrations.’ What do they refer to? “You are a living energy field. Your body is composed of energy-producing particles, each of which is in constant motion. So, like everything and everyone else in the universe, you are vibrating and creating energy. The field of vibrational medicine, sometimes called energy medicine, seeks to use the vibrational energy generated by and around your body to optimize your health. To many people, the concept of energy fields in the body may sound more spiritual than medicinal. More research must be done to understand how electrical and magnetic energy in the body stimulate chemical processes. But there’s growing evidence that these energies can be used to influence your health outcomes. What do we know about vibrations? Vibrations are a kind of rhythm. Rhythms happen on a grand scale, like seasonal changes and tidal patterns. They also happen within your body. Heartbeats, breathing rates, and circadian rhythms are examples of physiological rhythms we can see, feel, and measure. But there are much smaller vibrations happening in your body, too. Inside each one of your cells, molecules vibrate at characteristic rates. Using atomic force microscopes, researchers have detected vibrations on the nanoscale — much smaller than 1/1000th the diameter of a single human hair. These vibrations generate electromagnetic energy waves. Researchers have found that vibrations and the electromagnetic energy associated with them cause changes in your cells, which can then affect how your body functions. Different molecules vibrate at different rates — and those rates can speed up or slow down if conditions around the molecules change. Temperature, for example, can change the speed of a molecule’s vibration. What’s the connection between thoughts, behaviors, and vibrations? Researchers have known for a long time that thoughts and behaviors affect the rhythms in your body. For example, anxious thoughts trigger the release of stress hormones that stimulate your heart rate to speed up or slow down. The sound vibrations of music, likewise, affect thoughts, emotions, and body systems. Vibrational energy experts think our behaviors and thoughts can also alter much smaller rhythms. Proponents believe it’s possible to speed up or slow down the vibrations that occur at the cellular and atomic levels by changing our thoughts, behaviors — and even our surroundings. Changing those nanovibrations, it’s thought, could ripple outward, affecting our mental state and physical health” (https://www.healthline.com/health/vibrational-energy).
Are you sensitive to energies, frequencies, vibrations? How do energies, frequencies, and vibrations affect you positively and negatively? What do you do to raise your vibration? Are you able to shift your energies?
